HORSE RACING
TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Grey Lassie – Her first race on synthetic she looked like a rocket ship; bullet work since, the one to beat.
Tikolino – Her synthetic debut was awful, albeit facing winners for the first time; for forgiving handicappers.
Long Shot -Bella Dancer
Race 2 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 20 feet), Purse $41,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds
Shem Tov – Frustrating horse has had good chances to graduate; this by far is the weakest field he’s ever faced.
Gooch’s Dream – Gave a good account of himself last time in his turf debut; like that Bejarano remains loyal.
Long Shot – River Lord
Race 3 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Stroppy – Gets class relief from Cal-bred stakes for this claiming price; like the turn back in distance too.
Proud Garrison – Jeff Mullins started the meet with an easy winner; expect his barn to be hot at Hollywood.
Long Shot – Warren’s Dreaming
Race 4 – 7 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Mr. Inn Zone – Beaten favorite returns to the claiming ranks; his last few races put him right there.
General Buffet – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; Mike Pupye is getting hot.
Long Shot – Chimi’s Nugget
Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $49,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Keladora – Clever looking claim by Carla Gaines; suspect she can be a very useful sort in 2009.
Briecat – Just missed in a Turf Paradise stakes; she could be lone speed if Jon Court lets her roll.
Long Shot – Double Dip
Race 6 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Mark Up Tiny – Well bet in two MSW sprint tries, now stretches out around 2-turns; may just be a grinder.
Crazy Tricia – Another stretching out around 2-turns for the first time; figures to be forwardly placed.
Long Shot – Uta’s Beauty
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 20 feet), Purse $44,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds
Victor’s Cry – He’s been handled like fine china, not gets tested with Garrett Gomez up; expect a big finish.
Times Gone By – Has the pedigree and price tag, $1.5 million, to be something special; takes the next step.
Long Shot – Cee Bargara
Race 8 – 6 furlongs, Purse $9,000, Claiming $8,000, 3-year-olds and up
I’ll Prey for You – Best of a sorry lot in this bottom claiming level; expect the staggers in the stretch run.
Top Lessee – In a race this bad, I look at the humans and here I see Jeff Mullins; I think he’ll have a big meet.
Long Shot – Yes He’s a Pistol
Best Bet – Victor’s Cry (race 7)
Hollywood Wednesday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/4/$15.60; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.00
Santa Anita Final Totals – 446/105/$763.20; Long Shots, 216/29/$376.20; Best Bets, 25/9/$38.80
