HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $59,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
Cost of Freedom – Slight edge to the favorite just claimed by John Sadler; despite 4 wins, he’s eligible for NW1X condition.
Lit’sgoodlookngray – Same deal here, he’s won 4 races and is eligible for NW1X too; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.
Long Shot – Ritz Cafe
Race 2 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $36,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
Dawn’s Early Sky – Claimed by the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer who drops in class; 4 improving workouts are a positive signal.
Ghosttrapper – Was all out to hang on by an inch in last; Steve Knapp knows that to win again, a drop in class makes sense.
Long Shot – Headache
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
Malibu Canyon – Though he ran for a price tag in last, he ran fast enough to win at this level; Tyler Baze for the photo.
Kalookan Heat – FTS from Melody Conlon has been working well for debut; colt offers some value at his 5/1 morning line odds.
Long Shot – Vital Force
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
Johnny High Brite – Jeff Mullins scratched him the other day for this easier spot; his race two back is fast enough to upset.
Caddymaster – Winning race last time, if repeated, can beat these too; Espinoza will settle midpack and grind it out late.
Long Shot – Satellite
Race 5 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, 2-years-olds
Blazing Spirit – Jeff Mullins has an uncoupled entry, so be wary; this guy chased Candy Lion in debut and finished fastest.
Party Hard – Showed speedball tactics in debut in a highly rated MSW race; if he can clear today, and improve, watch out.
Long Shot – Arashi Cat
Race 6 – 6 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Fabulous Moolah – Cody Autrey has been very quiet so far; he brought a different kind of horse so I’d keep an eye on him.
Starstruck Kristen – Claimed by Gary Stute and given a small class rise today; prefers to sit a trip and try to rally wide.
Long Shot – Love Happens
Race 7 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
I Want Revenge – This is a split with race 5; Jeff Mullins colt also chased Candy Lion in last and ran a respectable third.
Speight the Halo – Beaten favorite got cooked early in a highly rated MSW race; expect Joel Rosario to show more patience.
Long Shot – Wild Wild Posse
Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $29,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Palamoun – Leap of faith that running first time for a claiming price will move him forward; hardest race in the pick 6.
Western Comment – He’s been improving in 3 races off a 9-month hiatus; this is a bad race, he could be a big factor late.
Long Shot – Cut Trail
Race 9 – 1 1/16th miles (turf), $150,000 La Jolla Handicap, 3-year-olds
Moral Compass – Just missed in a fine effort in the Oceanside; Corey Nakatani subs for Garrett Gomez who is at Arlington.
Tangled Tango – Was finishing fast, but too late, in the Oceanside; this is a nice colt who figures to keep improving.
Long Shot – Sky Cape
Race 10 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
If Not for You – Favorite must draw in off the also eligible list; her race last time, if repeated, would crush these.
Speed Passport – Ran evenly in debut at NoCal in a tougher MSW race; she drops in class and could surprise at a price.
Long Shot – Haleakala Heat
Best Bet – Blazing Spirit (race 5)
