HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 2 furlongs, Purse $36,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Dulce Maria – Should improve in start number two; note that Ward had two in that race and the longer price, Little Yogi, won.
Gold Goddess – Logical chalk off a good debut facing similar; Gerry Olguin did nothing wrong, lateral move to Jose Valdivia.
Long Shot – Tamis Stormtrooper
Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
O Bee Naki – Consistent sort keeps changing barns, and running well; should be a square price joining the Let’s Go Metz barn.
Run Kitty Run – Speedy sort may find herself on a lone lead; a lone speed is the most dangerous play in horse racing.
Long Shot – In My Life
Race 3 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Brendolyn – She seldom throws in a bad one; good late kick, she had some subtle trouble last time out, offers some value.
Honored Gold – Tepid chalk in an open affair; she has good tactical speed to sit a perfect trip, climbs the claiming ladder.
Long Shot – Ms. Wonder Woman
Race 4 – 1 mile, Purse $47,000, Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds
Dr. Au Jus – Doug O’Neill drops him in for a price tag for the first time in his career; he should enjoy the class relief.
Fantasy Free – Another taking a big drop running first time for a claiming price; Ed Moger barn has been sneaky good this meet.
Long Shot – Paroxysm
Race 5 – 6 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
Oldtophatandtails – Speedy sort ran an improved race last time; key is the horse inside of him, Go Flags Bro, has speed too.
Ringmaster – I know he’s 0-for-16 lifetime, but that kind has been winning this meet; figures to be in stride in the lane.
Long Shot – Smart Demand
Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $34,000, Claiming $32,000, Fillies, 4-year-olds
Shebang – Taking a big class drop in search of victory; Hendricks using his main man Solis who is riding much better of late.
All Set – This filly is taking a very un-Frankel like drop in class; I suspect she’ll have plenty of claims in for her.
Long Shot – Cherie’s Dream
Race 7 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $57,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds
Behindatthebar – Colt has more talent than he showed in the El Camino Real Derby; return to Cushion track will help him.
Overextended – Was thrown to the wolves once too often last year; O’Neill starts him from scratch to rebuild his confidence.
Long Shot – Rivergrade Boy
Race 8 – 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Tripped the Light – Beaten chalk did not run badly in last when defeated; she offers decent value at 5/1 odds.
Warren’s Sassy Cat – Tepid chalk in a very difficult heat; if she improves a step off her career debut, she can win.
Long Shot – Tuscan Princess
Best Bet – Dr. Au Jus (race 4)
