TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Ballpark Butterfly – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; like the turn back in distance too.
American Symphony – Big barn switch from Doug O’Neill to Keith Cragmyle; barn is winning at 23 percent, good enough for this.
Long Shot – Discover Dolly
Race 2 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Hennessy Rose – Interesting changes since a sharp win over lesser lights in last; proven to love the synthetic surfaces.
Topper’s Smiling – Sight unseen since facing much tougher last summer at Del Mar; should be fresh, fit and dangerous.
Long Shot – Angel Eyed
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Claiming $20,000, 4-year-olds
Familiar Stranger – Claimed by Mike Marlow and spotted nicely to win right away; another who loves the synthetic surfaces.
Ymustichasethecat – May have been rushed a bit last time so a rider switch today; Jon Court should stalk and drive late.
Long Shot – True Man
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Excitement – Gets class relief since a last place try in the Miesque 4-months ago; Ben Cecil tries for a confidence builder.
Decorator – Is bred to be a nice filly, maybe favoring grass over dirt or synthetic; cozy wide post to begin her rally.
Long Shot – Dajolie
Race 5 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds
Maui Mark – Sharp debut from parking lot post 14; only fear is if one of the FTS can run, you’ll see the tote board action.
Major Smoke – His debut wasn’t too bad either as he closely trailed Maui Mark; we’ll see if one of the FTS is a speedball.
Long Shot – Deep Pockets
Race 6 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Rate of Exchange – Has had an excuse of some sort in every loss; the rail post is perfect for her going a 2-turn mile.
Boston Cat – Jenine Sahadi has not gotten many good horses the train the last few years; this one was with Patrick Biancone.
Long Shot – Spring Style
Race 7 – 6 1/2 furlongs, $150,000 Las Flores Handicap, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Tiz Elemental – This is one nice filly who didn’t miss a beat off a 10-month hiatus; she’s a lot more than just a Cal-bred.
Glorified – Ran a big race in the Honest Lady, but Tiz Elemental got the jump on her; big rider switch to Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot – Overly Tempting
Race 8 – 1 mile (turf), $100,000 Valentine Dancer Handicap, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Rockella – May have bounced last time in her second start off a 2-month hiatus; most importantly is reunited with Bejarano.
Bachelorette One – Upset win last time in the Irish O’Brien; she stretches back out where Chantal Sutherland must be patient.
Long Shot – Bootleg Annie
Race 9 – 7 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds
Squallcreek – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; outside post is good for an elongated sprint.
Call Transfer – Claimed by Rafael Becerra, he can show immediate improvement; like the turn back in distance for this.
Long Shot – Sir Carson
