TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 4-year-olds and up
Carman – Ran well last time returning from a 9-month sabbatical; if he moves forward a step, he’ll be tough to handle.
Partywithlarryz – Beaten favorite in MSW field in NoCal, faces a softer bunch today; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.
Long Shot – Buck Basolo
Race 2 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $44,000, Claiming $50,000, 4-year-olds
Mt Orient – Tiny edge in an incredibly difficult race; like the parking lot post going down the hillside turf course.
Miller’s Turbo – Returns from a good try in a Turf Paradise turf stakes; tactical speed and post to sit a perfect trip.
Long Shot – Tox Dee Bee
Race 3 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Love Happens – Is moving in the right direction, Gomez remains loyal for the money shot; facing a pretty slow group.
Quid Non – Uneven effort last time, she appears capable of much better; may prefer to settle early and make one run.
Long Shot – No Cream Or Sugar
Race 4 – 6 furlongs, Purse $33,000, Maiden claiming $75,000, 3-year-olds
McArthur – Interesting that Gomez exits a Todd Pletcher cull to ride for Carava; suspect he senses some improvement today.
That’s Grand – Did a classic pop and stop in debut under Gomez; was well bet to 7/2 odds, Valdivia takes over here.
Long Shot – Surf Rider
Race 5 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $57,000, Optional claiming $32,000, Cal-breds, 4-year-olds and up
Steven’s Being – Dead late closer may have moved too soon in last, and still won; Bejarano for Talamo who rides the chalk.
Made the Finals – Speedball figures to dictate the early pace; gave way grudgingly last time in a solid effort.
Long Shot – Brian the Bold
Race 6 – 7 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
Publication – Old guy has definitely lost a step, or maybe two; drops to this bottom level, may still have enough to win.
New Rule – Ran a winning race for this level in last, unfortunate to not win; flattered when Trail Mix won next time out.
Long Shot – Get Off the Sugar
Race 7 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $45,000, Starter handicap $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Rockella – Favored despite an awful looking running line in the Hermosa Beach; her race before that is fast enough to win.
Bootleg Annie – NoCal shipper attracts the attention of Gomez; has won 7-of-10 turf starts, an enviable record in any class.
Long Shot – Jambalaya Joy
Race 8 – 1 1/8th miles, $250,000 San Antonio Handicap, 4-year-olds and up
Awesome Gem – They made the wrong morning line favorite, this guy will be the chalk; has run five fast synthetic track races.
Student Council – Made a long trip to Tokyo for nothing in the Japan Cup; another well proven over synthetic surfaces.
Long Shot – Rathor
Race 9 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds
Haggis Macpherson – Tough wide trip in last from post 12; moves inside where he may need to use more speed to hold position.
Quityerbellyaching – Was ambitiously placed in last off the claim by Sadler; class drop and Gomez point to a sincere effort.
Long Shot – Follows None
Best Bet – Haggis Macpherson (race 9)
