HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 4-year-olds and up
Buck Basolo – Ran fine in return off a 6-month hiatus; like the switch to Nakatani, Talamo seems to be losing his big clients.
Sun Lightning – Closed a lot better than it appears in his running line; Gallagher babies progress with racing, expect better.
Long Shot – Tote’s Humdinger
Race 2 – 1 mile, Purse $36,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds
Law Breaker – Dropping to the lowest class level of his career; tactical speed for Gryder to put him anywhere he wants.
Fight On – Chance to be lone speed, the most dangerous play in racing; problem is speed tends to get dulled over synthetic.
Long Shot – Demon Inside
Race 3 – 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $68,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
Boboman – He’s supposed to be able to win a race like this running backwards; coming back off a 10-month sabbatical.
Chattahoochee War – Frankel has a couple horses in here who can upset; he has ability, but a lot of gaps in his resume.
Long Shot – Heroi Do Bafra
Race 4 – 7 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Gloria Jeanne – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; she has run for a price tag before.
Ciacci’s Angel – Speedball draws a parking lot post in this elongated sprint; should outbreak this field and take the lead.
Long Shot – Judge in the West
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $47,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies, 4-year-olds
Foxy Games – Claimed by Jorge Periban who is an underrated trainer; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip throughout.
Just Knock – Taking a big class drop to run for a price tag for the first time; been away 4-months, always respect Frankel.
Long Shot – Angeletta
Race 6 – 1 mile, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
El Falcon – Drops to the lowest claiming class of his career; he’s already run some races fast enough to defeat these.
Cool Commander – Faced much tougher at Del Mar 7-months ago; been silent since, he should be fresh, fit and dangerous.
Long Shot – Cadeaux du Monde
Race 7 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), $125,000 Irish O’Brien, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Rockella – Chance for Hollendorfer to win another rich stakes; filly has improved enormously sinced claimed for only $32k.
Lightmyfirebaby – Chantal Sutherland has been the darling of the $2 horseplayer; chance to improve her ROI right here.
Long Shot – Sumthingtotalkabt
Race 8 – 7 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Rate of Exchange – She could easily be unbeaten right now except for racing luck; if she can handle synthetics, forget about it.
Masterful Miss – Draws well for her stalking style in this elongated sprint; 6-of-8 in the money, needs the luck of the Irish.
Long Shot – Earle’s First Girl
Best Bet – Gloria Jeanne (race 4)
Santa Anita Sunday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 20/4/$39.00; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals – 889/208/$1,512.40; Long Shots, 438/57/$707.70; Best Bets, 49/16/$67.40
