TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $38,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Mark Set Go – Claimed by Mike Mitchell and spotted nicely to win right away; beatean favorite figures to improve today.
Mama Lula – Tepid chalk won last time against similar company at 7/1 odds; the Mig has done well riding first call for Spawr.
Long Shot – The King’s Lass
Race 2 – 1 mile, Purse $29,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds
Silver Dust – Taking a sharp class drop from MSW to this $50k level; his synthetic surface races look better than on turf.
Bala Rapida – Ran green as grass in debut, but seemed to figure things out in the deep stretch; Gomez remains loyal.
Long Shot – Scott’s Spirit
Race 3 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), $75,000 Joe Hernandez, 4-year-olds and up
Charmo – Favorite has been away 10-months, but Canani can bring them back ready; like that Gomez is taking the call.
Night Chapter – Frankel horse may be the unluckiest horse on the grounds; one of these days he’s going to get a clear trip.
Long Shot – Marvel Wood
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Colony Trick – You’ll have an edge on me because you can see the tote board; showed some improvement last time out.
Song of Illinois – Watch the four FTS and see who takes some betting; this filly ran the best race of her life last out.
Long Shot – Jump Ball
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
Cavanal – At 5/1 odds, this Drysdale second time starter is being overlooked; Gomez does not ride horses that need a race.
Great Siege – Tepid chalk in a wide open turf route; adding blinkers on and Victor Espinoza for the injured Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot – Shem Tov
Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Secret Shuttle – This guy exploded in the stretch for a barn not known for winning first time; wide rallies are effective.
Uxmal – Battled well in this class last time out; should be a square price with Agapito Delgadillo riding for Bob Hess.
Long Shot – Ricky El Corredor
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $61,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
Dilemma – Bad parking lot post going a mile on grass; Gomez usually figures a way to tuck in and save ground before the turn.
Uffizi – Ground saving journey for a convincing last out winner; Corey Nakatani takes over for Bejarano, is not outclassed.
Long Shot – Rather Be Lucky
Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds and up
Common Trust – If Gomez mounts pan out, he could win quite a few today; reclaimed by Jeff Mullins, I need say no more.
Nerinx – Sliding down the claiming ladder where he could be the boss today; tactical speed and Flores to sit a perfect trip.
Long Shot – Cousin Lew
Race 9 – 1 1/2 miles (turf), $200,000 San Luis Rey Handicap, 4-year-olds and up
Porfido – He has a chance to be the controlling speed throughout; the pace will be slower than in the San Luis Obispo.
On the Acorn – Logical chalk was one of the feel good stories from 2007; long winded sort won’t get into gear until late.
Long Shot – Boule d’Or
Race 10 – 6 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds
McArthur – Taking the needed class drop to get him over the hump; one of a few exiting a key race for this.
Dynaquake – Claimed by Rafael Becerra who immediately adds blinkers on; showed good speed in debut and got run down late.
Long Shot – Minezeno
Best Bet – Common Trust (race 8)
