TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies, 4-year-olds

Shawklit Sundae – Claimed by the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; she should appreciate today’s shorter distance.

Missing Treasure – Chance to close if the early pace gets overly contested; sliding down the claiming ladder.

Long Shot – Gold Chant

Race 2 – 7 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Zee Topper – Claimed by Knapp and spotted at her peak class level; should enjoy the turn back in distance.

O Bee Naki – Unlucky sort in last gets claimed by Knapp and a big rider change to Court; been an honest mare of late.

Long Shot – Beyla

Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Soaring Lauren – Tepid choice for the favorite who has closed well in some starts; exits a good race and bullet work.

Sams Birthday – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to compete.

Long Shot – Truely Comical

Race 4 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $36,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds and up

Gold Trim – Tiny edge in a very difficult race; Gomez was smart enough to take back off a very fast pace in last.

Behind the Screen – Claimed by Mitchell, that’s enough to improve him a couple notches; can sit closer if asked.

Long Shot – Prince of Gold

Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $28,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds

Warrens Attack Cat – His only try around 2-turns, he was overmatched in the Cal Cup; he’s improved a lot since then.

Nitro Active – One of many moving up from breaking their maiden last time out; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.

Long Shot – Hunter Creek

Race 6 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds

Starzig – Shirreffs barn is known to give a horse a race, and then fire away; Smith has done well with limited chances.

Change Tack – This looks like a typical Cassidy Euro purchase; she may not win today, but he’ll bring her along in time.

Long Shot – Love and War

Race 7 – 1 mile, Purse $57,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds

Sassou – Big rider switch to Bejarano who has impressed most with his talented riding; saves ground, guns them down late.

Waafi – Never had a chance in the San Pedro over a ridiculously fast racetrack; main question is 2-turns for the first time.

Long Shot – Bert’s Law

Race 8 – 1 mile, Purse $21,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

Mud Sweat ‘n Tears – When top jocks ride in bad races, you have to look at them twice; expect Bejarano to send early.

Afternoon Gold – Gomez riding for Sadler who drops this filly thru the class floor; need not be much to get the job done.

Long Shot – Van Brit

Best Bet – Sassou (race 7)

Santa Anita Monday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 14/6/$45.60; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Santa Anita Totals – 633/145/$1,066.00; Long Shots, 314/43/$533.80; Best Bets, 34/12/$51.20
