HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Star’s Promise – Logical chalk takes no imagination to see winning; a repeat of his last race wins this by daylight.
Concinnous – The chalk is clearly not worth 4/5 odds, but the rest are very slow horses; stretching out around 2-turns.
Long Shot – Backyard Party
Race 2 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Spanish Heat – Won’t be 4-wide today unless Bejarano takes him outside to rally; appears to be moving forward.
E Bradley – Tepid chalk in a less than interesting heat; Peter Eurton adds blinkers on, chance if he improves a step.
Long Shot – True Suggestion
Race 3 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $63,000, Optional claiming $100,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Roshani – Been away 5-months, but showed a lot of ability before that; Gomez has been riding first call for Todd Pletcher.
Shermeen – Big rider switch to Bejarano which has made the difference in many cases; saves all the ground inside.
Long Shot – Gula Gold
Race 4 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $55,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Igraine – She’s better if taken off the pace; pretty sure that’s what new rider Espinoza will do with this filly.
Caressive – Tepid chalk in a very open race; stakes placed last time in a weak version of the grade 2 La Canada.
Long Shot – Over Forli
Race 5 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $52,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Macadamia – Good try last time off a 2-month freshener; she has a lot of back class and should relish the class relief.
Petite Cherie – Flores takes over for Tyler Baze who opted to ride the favorite; saves all the ground to make one run.
Long Shot – Squeeze Me Tight
Race 6 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Our Road Scholar – Pretty easy to see why she’ll be a heavy favorite; her last two races are both fast enough to win.
Ata Honour – FTS from a very clever baby barn, E. G. Burnison; he hires one of the best gate riders in the room, Flores.
Long Shot – Titan Queen
Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $34,000, Claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Almacita – Dead late closer never got going last time out; is dropped in class and shortened up in distance, wake up call.
In Daddy’s Honor – Her last four races have all been good; consistent sort isn’t overly fast, but is a hard tryer.
Long Shot – Let’s Eat Out
Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
Forest Prince – Had a less than perfect trip last time out; figures to be a lot tighter today, and get good racing luck.
Savvy and Smooth – Speedball will appreciate the turf rail out 15 feet; chance maybe to spurt away from them early.
Long Shot – Kabob
Race 9 – 1 1/8th miles, $300,000 Santa Margarita Handicap, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Nashoba’s Key – Reunited with Gomez who rode her to victory in her first three races; she’s never lost on synthetic.
Zenyatta – Undefeated filly facing the toughest test of her young career; watch her replays, she’s still green as grass.
Long Shot – Double Trouble
Race 10 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $36,000, Claiming $32,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Mark Set Go – Key is that Gomez opted to ride back; had a rugged trip in last, clean journey could make the difference.
Britney Heat – Don’t know if she’ll draw in, but if she does I like her; second start off the claim by Mike Pupye.
Long Shot – Formal Rush
Best Bet – Nashoba’s Key (race 9)
Santa Anita Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 20/3/$21.40; Long Shots, 10/2/$16.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals – 785/176/$1,301.00; Long Shots, 388/54/$675.60; Best Bets, 43/13/$56.60
