HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 11:45 a.m.
Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds
Hecouldgoalltheway – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; that’s all I can say.
Der Van – Should improve after a nondescript career debut; this is one sorry looking race for the opener.
Long Shot – Last Black Lion
Race 2 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $16,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
Quasimodo – Wesley Ward decided he’s seen enough and puts the red flag up for this guy; suspect will interest many claims.
Mananan McLir – Continues sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low level; need not be much to win today.
Long Shot – Norway House
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $44,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Sunset Tijuana – Visually impressive come from behind win in last, now Sadler is dropping her down in class; the one to beat.
Onefunsonofagun – She ran a winning race for this level in last, but got caught by the favorite late; will set a fast pace.
Long Shot – Elsie Jo
Race 4 – 6 furlongs, $300,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Tiz Elemental – The pace scenario should flattered her natural stalking style; been away 9-months, that’s my only fear.
Dearest Trickski – Undefeated since claimed by Sadler four races ago; will her bubble burst, she faces a speed heavy group.
Long Shot – Coli Bear
Race 5 – 1 1/8th miles, $500,000 Sunshine Million Filly and Mare Turf, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Nashoba’s Key – She could still be unbeaten with a better trip in the BC Filly & Mare Turf; holds a big class advantage.
Quite a Bride – She is a free wheeling mare who does not like to be choked down; that’s my only fear with Gomez riding.
Long Shot – Snow Cone
Race 6 – 6 furlongs, $250,000 Sunshine Millions Dash, 3-year-olds
Bob Black Jack – That was one explosive win last time out; he may not want to go far, but he’s proven to be very fast.
Georgie Boy – Sight unseen since tearing them up at Del Mar in the Futurity; will see a quick pace to close into.
Long Shot – Winsome Charm
Race 7 – 1 1/8th miles, $1-million Sunshine Millions Classic, 4-year-olds and up
Go Between – What better jockey to upset than Gomez on a dead late closer; his one synthetic start was a corker at Keeneland.
Diamond Stripes – Tepid chalk in an extremely difficult race to handicap; I suspect a solid pace will aid the closers.
Long Shot – Electrify
Race 8 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $57,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
Mr. Wolverine – This start off a 17-month hiatus could be his best; he’s won going around 2-turns before so he offers value.
Bad Boy – Tepid chalk in another wide open race; tactical speed to sit a trip, gets class relief from a quartet of stakes.
Long Shot – Wild Diplomat
Race 9 – 6 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds
Mr. Elroy – Speedy sort fought gamely into the deep stretch; Gomez takes over for the money shot, shorter distance helps.
Public Image – Sise babies typically improve the second time out; big rider switch to Flores who’s having a great meet.
Long Shot – Draft Choice
Race 10 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $61,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 4-year-olds and up
Kalgoorlie – Has the pedigree to be a nice animal and is now starting to show it; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.
Dilemma – Logical chalk with Gomez taking over for Solis; very unlucky to lose two head bobs in the last three starts.
Long Shot – Joy’s Comet
Race 11 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Perfect Cast – Pupye adding blinkers on which should help her focus; showing subtle improvement with each start.
True Suggestion – Off slow in debut, settled into stride and then flew home late; interesting to see her progress.
Long Shot – Song of Illinois
Best Bet – Bob Black Jack (race 6)
Santa Anita Monday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/4/$30.20; Long Shots, 8/2/$21.60; Best Bet, 1/1/$5.80
