HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Phoebe’s Song – Taken from a maiden claiming win by Sadler, she could have a nice upside; tactical speed to hold her position.
Asian Eyes – Tepid chalk may have the best late kick, which has proven beneficial over Polytrack; interesting trainer change.
Long Shot – Lady Eagle
Race 2 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Lutyens – Ran a winning race for this low level last time; it was his second start off a 15-month hiatus, hope he doesn’t react.
Protectorofallevil – Taking a significant class drop for Machowsky to face a very slow group; need not be much to graduate.
Long Shot – Senior Discount
Race 3 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $33,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
Colonel Courtney – Parking lot post is not as big a deal on Polytrack as one might think; like the Nakatani-Hollendorfer team.
Silver Vista – Claimed for Sadler at Keeneland and unraced since; he may be trying to set up an optional claiming condition.
Long Shot – McNasty
Race 4 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
More Happy – FTS from Baffert barn cost a cool $1-million; by Vindication who was a superb 2-year-old trained by Baffert.
B R’s Girl – In a race full of first time starters, she has valuable, and quality, experience; Nakatani off to a quick start.
Long Shot – Little Bug
Race 5 – 6 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
Voracious – If I can get his 6/1 morning line odds on him now, I’ll be in with both hands; clever win over similar in last.
French Souvenir – Tepid chalk in a race full of possibilities; West barn had a cool Hollywood, but this guy has back class.
Long Shot – Hockey Fan
Race 6 – 6 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
Their He Goes – Been away 9-months, now making his first start switching from Frankel to Sadler; got stuck in seconditis.
Steamboat Bay – Got a test drive last time off a 9-month hiatus; ran well at Del Mar last year, suspect he’ll be ready.
Long Shot – Wild Diplomat
Race 7 – 1 1/16th miles (turf), $85,000 Osunitas Handicap, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Double Trouble – She may not win her races by much, but she knows how to win; Frankel barn must be included in every race.
Arm Candy – Gets class relief off a good try in the CashCall Mile; she’s facing a field similar to her effort two races ago.
Long Shot – Kris’ Sis
Race 8 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $59,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
My City by the Bay – Want a big price in the middle of the pick 6, why not here; the favorites, I think, have holes in them.
Furioso Star – Logical chalk won his MSW in fast fashion, but has not been seen in 7-months; is he your kind of single?
Long Shot – Ridingwiththeking
Race 9 – 1 1/16th miles, $300,000 San Diego Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
Awesome Gem – The ease of his last win can’t be measured by 1-length or time; may be ready to take his game to the next level.
Heatseeker – With the Frankel barn as hot as it is, why can’t this colt outrun his turf numbers; adding blinkers on today.
Long Shot – Sun Boat
Race 10 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $46,000, Claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
Mananan McLir – I picked the favorite in a wide open race with respect to Mitchell; his race two back if repeated can win.
Chadlington – He’s got a good shot in an incredibly wide open race; he didn’t get much trip last time, but won two races ago.
Long Shot – Big Bold Cat
Best Bet – Double Trouble (race 7)
Del Mar Friday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 14/5/$29.60; Long Shots, 7/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$5.60
Del Mar Totals – 43/14/$102.00; Long Shots, 22/2/$13.40; Best Bets, 3/2/$11.20
