HORSE RACING
TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1:20 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $17,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
Noble Masterpiece – Logical chalk has a ton of back class to suspect he can pair up winning races; big respect for Sherman barn.
Spriggzee – Won going away last time when the recipient of a perfect pace scenario; not sure he’s really as good as he looked.
Long Shot – Johnny High Brite
Race 2 – 6 furlongs (turf, rail at 10 feet), Purse $31,000, Claiming $32,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Charmin Dot – Could lead to a very frugal daily double payout; Stein drops her into a spot where she figures to dominate.
Red Opal – Another sliding down the claiming ladder where she has most of these over a barrel; saves ground and fires late.
Long Shot – Unusual Sonata
Race 3 – 7 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds and up
Watch Over Me – Beaten favorite takes a significant class drop in search of victory; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.
Count Orange – Claimed by Canani and spotted nicely to succeed; has put in two works since the claim, both pretty fair.
Long Shot – Quiet Period
Race 4 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $46,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Barbara’s Love – If my top picks win, the early pick 4 will pay $25; if she improves a step off a good debut, she’ll win.
Spring Awakening – FTS from Mitchell who typically doesn’t crank them up in debut; like that bugboy Talamo is legged up.
Long Shot – I Dig Her
Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 10 feet), Purse $27,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Our Partner – Second best last time to a multiple race winner Surf Town; tactical speed and meet leading rider Baze to win.
Casual Thunder – I’ve seen enough of this guy to know that 1-for-25 means he refuses to win; suspect will be heavily bet again.
Long Shot – Ocean Melody
Race 6 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $51,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Go Dawg – Nice Baffert filly got her diploma in third career start; she could have been claimed for $80k on pedigree alone.
Lyrical Sound – Shulman filly is available for $40k and she may be worth taking; her start two back could upset these.
Long Shot – Just Em
Race 7 – 6 furlongs (turf, rail at 10 feet), Purse $46,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Wildcat Girl – Blanc is a top turf rider and this filly is not without a puncher’s chance; sits still to make one big run.
Stellina – Tepid chalk in the most wide open race of the day; she needed to drop into claiming to finally get competitive.
Long Shot – Miss Bertrando
Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $51,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds and up
Pointing Star – Suspect this is a good favorite to try and upset; her fine Cushion track races should transfer to grass.
Stormy Grant – Canani colt has paired 2-turn routes wins in sharp fashion; he is in great condition to keep the streak going.
Long Shot – Buc the Spartan
Race 9 – 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Humidity – Been away a year, but has two things going for her; Talamo takes the call and she drops from MSW to claiming.
Themis Valentine – Did a classic pop and stop as a heavy favorite last time; she’ll offer a lot more value this time around.
Long Shot – Truckee Trance
Best Bet – Charmin Dot (race 2)
Hollywood Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 19/4/$26.80; Long Shots, 11/3/$34.60; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Hollywood Totals – 950/223/$1,484.80; Long Shots, 464/66/$711.60; Best Bets, 56/24/$102.80
