Red Wings clinch spot in playoffs, tie NHL record

The Detroit Red Wings got back into the postseason and tied an NHL record.

Pavel Datsyuk had two goals and an assist as Detroit became the first team to secure a playoff spot this season with a 5-3 home victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.

It was the fifth straight win for the NHL-leading Red Wings, who reached 100 points for a league-record tying eighth straight season. Montreal had 100-point seasons from 1975 to 1982.

Also: The NHL suspended Pittsburgh Penguins forward Georges Laraque for three games, one day after he injured Buffalo defenseman Nathan Paetsch with an elbow to the head.

Paetsch is out indefinitely with a concussion.

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Mattias Ohlund will miss the rest of the regular season after having surgery to remove bone chips from his left knee.

Ohlund leads Canucks defensemen with 24 points in 53 games.

Antillon, Fields win by KOs on Hard Rock card

Undefeated Urbano Antillon stopped Bobby Pacquiao in the first round of a lightweight fight at the Hard Rock Hotel.

Antillon, from Maywood, Calif., improved to 22-0 with his 15th knockout, stopping the Filipino with a left to the head and a right to the body.

Pacquiao dropped to 28-14-3 with his fourth straight loss.

Heavyweight Tye Fields of Las Vegas stopped Roderick Willis of Dallas at 1:37 of the first round. Fields improved to 41-1 with his 37th knockout. Willis is 14-3-1.

Also: Joe Mesi has withdrawn from his April 4 fight against Terry “Hurricane” Smith in Lincoln, R.I., because of a torn shoulder muscle that will require him to rest for at least three weeks.

Skier Miller wins second overall World Cup title

American Bode Miller was assured of his second overall World Cup title in four years after his closest challenger decided not to ski one of the season’s final two races.

Didier Cuche was not going to compete in the season’s final slalom, Swiss team spokeswoman Kristina Schneider said. Cuche, a speed specialist who won the downhill season title over Miller this week in Bormio, Italy, doesn’t race the slalom.

American Lindsey Vonn just missed clinching the overall World Cup title when Maria Riesch captured the super-G crown by finishing sixth in the discipline’s final race of the season.

If Vonn, who finished second, had won the race, she would have been the overall champion.

Riesch trails Vonn by 197 points in the overall standings with two races remaining and 200 points at stake.

Miller and Vonn are on the verge of the first American sweep of the overall titles since Phil Mahre and Tamara McKinney did it 25 years ago.

Also: The UNLV men’s tennis team lost 4-3 to South Carolina at Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels (5-6) won in doubles and got singles victories from David Campbell and Rony Yeghnazary to take a 3-1 lead before the 68th-ranked Gamecocks (8-6) won the final three singles matches.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano was thrown head-first to the ground in a spill during the eighth race at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

He was unseated when his mount, Parisian Art, apparently had a fatal heart attack inside the eighth pole.

Bejarano, 25, is Santa Anita’s leading rider with 60 wins at the winter meeting.

Two-time U.S. figure skating champion Evan Lysacek withdrew from next week’s world championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, after hurting his left arm in a fall during practice Wednesday.

Finland’s Mikko Ilonen and Australia’s Tony Carolan shot 5-under 67s to share the first-round lead in the Ballantine’s Championship in Jeju Island, South Korea, the European tour’s first event in the country.
