Mickelson tied for lead in British Open warm-up

Phil Mickelson shot a 6-under-par 65 to share the first-round lead with Graeme Storm, Soren Hansen and Lee Westwood in the Scottish Open at Luss, Scotland.

Mickelson had an eagle and five birdies in the British Open warm-up at Loch Lomond. The four lead Mikko Ilonen, Marcel Siem, Mark Foster and Christian Nilsson by one stroke.

Also: Neal Lancaster shot a 7-under 64 to grab a one-shot lead over Duffy Waldorf, Paul Stankowski, Kenny Perry, Scott Gutschewski and Jason Dufner after one round of the John Deere Classic at Silvis, Ohio.

Masters champion Zach Johnson, ranked 15th in the world and the only top-45 player in the tournament, was six shots behind Lancaster.

Se Ri Pak shot an 8-under 63 to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic at Sylvania, Ohio. Pak, who has won the event four times, finished with the best first round in the tournament’s 23-year history.

Tadd Fujikawa, a 16-year-old from Hawaii, said he will give up his amateur status and make his pro debut Aug. 2 at the Reno-Tahoe Open. In January at the Sony Open, Fujikawa became the youngest player in more than 50 years to make the cut on the PGA Tour.

Brent Sutter might be named coach of Devils

Brent Sutter resigned as coach and general manager of the Western Hockey League’s Red Deer Rebels — a team he owns — amid speculation he will be named coach of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils.

Sutter, who turned over coaching duties to older brother Brian, wouldn’t comment on his plans. He will retain ownership of the Rebels.

The Devils called a news conference for today to make a “major announcement” but declined to provide details.

Also: All-Star defenseman Sheldon Souray agreed to a five-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers. Terms weren’t released.

Feds taking closer look at Benoit’s physician

Federal agents in Atlanta have expanded their investigation of pro wrestler Chris Benoit’s personal doctor to include former patients and other patients of his who have died, The Associated Press has learned.

An affidavit by a federal Drug Enforcement Administration agent that was part of a warrant to search Dr. Phil Astin’s west Georgia office for a third time said investigators on Tuesday seized 68 boxes of documents, including patient records and billing statements.

The affidavit said agents were in part looking for medical records of inactive or deceased patients, including medical tests, test results and physician notes.

Police have said Benoit strangled his wife and son, then hanged himself in his suburban Atlanta home the weekend of June 22.

Ball State basketball coach Thompson to quit

Ronny Thompson has told Ball State he will resign after one season as coach.

The Cardinals finished 9-22 last season, and the school has said Thompson and his staff broke NCAA rules by being at voluntary offseason team workouts.

Also: Minnesota Lynx guard Lindsey Harding, the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, will miss the rest of her rookie season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. She was leading all rookies in scoring (11.7) and assists (3.9) and was second in rebounds (4.4).

A doping case was dropped in Geneva because of procedural problems with a positive test involving a show jumping horse at the Equestrian World Cup Final in April at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Air Jordan Z tested positive for a banned drug at the event in April after his rider, Daniel Deusser of Germany, placed second. But the sport’s governing body said the case was dismissed because of a problem with the sample bags.

American Serena Williams and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova won’t play this weekend when the countries meet in the Fed Cup semifinals at Stowe, Vt.

Williams, who hurt her left thumb and calf at Wimbledon, was replaced by Meilen Tu, and Alla Kudryavtseva will replace Kuznetsova.

The San Diego Chargers selected Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver and the Baltimore Ravens chose Maryland tackle Jared Gaither in the NFL supplemental draft. It was the first time since 1998 that two players were taken in the supplemental draft.

Crystl Bustos and Kelly Kretschman hit two-run homers, and the United States opened its title defense at the World Cup of Softball with a 9-1 victory over Venezuela in Oklahoma City.
