Ex-Rebel Wade charged with embezzlement

Former UNLV guard Mark Wade has been charged with embezzling more than $15,000 in his former job as an assistant basketball coach at UC Riverside.

Wade, 41, was fired Jan. 5 after almost two years at the Division I school, university spokeswoman Kris Lovekin said Friday.

The Riverside County district attorney’s office has issued an arrest warrant for Wade on one count of felony embezzlement. He was charged in Riverside Superior Court on July 12, the same day the warrant was issued.

Wade is accused of depositing into his personal bank account the proceeds from two university checks and one electronic fund transfer, according to the warrant.

Wade played at UNLV from 1985 to 1987 and helped the Rebels reach the 1987 Final Four. His 18 assists against Indiana in the national semifinals remain the NCAA Tournament record.

Also: Former UNR standout Nick Fazekas signed with the Dallas Mavericks.

Fazekas, a second-round pick, was the team’s third-leading scorer (12.7) and rebounder (4.7) in the recently completed Rocky Mountain Revue (Utah) summer league. In the Las Vegas summer league, he averaged 6.6 points and 4.4 rebounds.

The Chicago Bulls signed first-round draft choice Joakim Noah and second-round selection Aaron Gray. Terms were not released.

The New York Knicks signed first-round draft pick Wilson Chandler. He will make a little less than $1 million in each of his first two seasons. The Knicks hold options for his third and fourth years.

Phoenix Suns guard Raja Bell had surgery on his right knee Thursday and will be sidelined four to six weeks.

Free-agent point guard Smush Parker, who played the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, signed with the Miami Heat, his seventh team since turning pro in 2002.

The Boston Celtics waived guard Allan Ray, who averaged 6.2 points last season as a rookie.

The Orlando Magic received final approval for a new arena scheduled to open in September 2010 as part of a $1.1 billion project.

Singh moves within shot of Canadian lead

Vijay Singh shot a 6-under-par 65 to move one stroke behind leaders Steve Allan and John Mallinger after the second round of the Canadian Open in Markham, Ontario.

Allan added a 68 to his opening 64 to match Mallinger (66) at 10-under 132. Allan birdied the par-3 17th, hitting his tee shot within inches on the 206-yard hole, and saved par on the par-4 18th with a 10-foot putt. Mallinger had five birdies in his bogey-free round.

Tripp Isenhour (68) joined Singh at 9 under.

Also: Diana D’Alessio of the United States and Jin-joo Hong of South Korea are at 7-under 137 for a three-stroke lead after the second round of the Evian Masters at Evian-Les-Bains, France.

Michelle Wie shot a 1-under 71 for a 144 total and made the cut. She had gone 24 consecutive rounds without breaking par.

Tom Watson missed a 5-foot putt on the last hole to lose a share of the lead at the Senior British Open in Gullane, Scotland, and first-round leader Nick Faldo lost his putting touch and slipped to sixth.

Watson finished with a par 71 and handed the lead to Des Smyth, who shot 70 and is at 2-under 140.

Faldo shot a 74 and was two strokes behind the leader.

Englishmen Zane Scotland and Lee Slattery were at 9-under 135 for a one-shot lead after the second round of the Deutsche Bank Players Championship in Alveslohe, Germany.

Canadian battles rain, makes first ATP semi

Almost nine hours after he began play, Canada’s Frank Dancevic reached his first ATP semifinal by rallying to defeat Russian Igor Kunitsyn 6-4, 7-6 (3) in a rain-plagued match at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships.

His reward is a semifinal date with top-seeded Andy Roddick, seeking his fourth trip to the finals in four years. Roddick eliminated No. 6 Hyung-Taik Lee of Korea 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-1 to bring his record at Indianapolis to 19-2 with two championships and a runner-up finish.

Dancevic’s match was halted by rain three times for a total of nearly eight hours.

Also: unseeded Sania Mirza beat fourth-seeded Patty Schnyder 7-6 (2), 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford, Calif.

Juan Monaco of Argentina upset top-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Austrian Open at Kitzbuehel, Austria.

Sabres’ Roy will sign $24 million contract

Buffalo Sabres forward Derek Roy avoided NHL arbitration by agreeing to a six-year, $24 million contract.

It’s a hefty deal for a third-line center coming off a career season in which he finished fifth on the Sabres with 63 points (21 goals, 42 assists) in 75 games. Roy made $627,000 last year.

Also: David Beckham will miss his second straight game today when the Los Angeles Galaxy plays 11-time Mexican first division champion Chivas in a SuperLiga tournament game at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The English star has a left ankle injury.

Sebastien Bourdais, a two-time winner of the San Jose Grand Prix, rallied from 17th on the time sheet and had the fastest qualifying lap to take the provisional pole for Sunday’s race. He turned a lap of 49.509 seconds (104.926 mph).

Ron Hornaday Jr. won the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Power Stroke Diesel 200 at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Clermont, Ind. Hornaday passed Travis Kvapil 30 laps from the finish of the 201-lap race, then maintained his lead after two late restarts.

Doug Herbert (Top Fuel), Mike Ashley (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) led qualifying in the NHRA Fram Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

Former heavyweight boxer James Oyebola died, four days after he was shot in the head following a dispute about smoking at a London bar, police said. The 6-foot-9-inch Nigerian-born boxer, 47, won a bronze medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games and retired in 1996.

Former IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson (46-11-2, 31 knockouts) knocked out Fred Moore (30-7) in the fifth round in Miami.

Mike Kirby and David Martinez have been named assistant baseball coaches at UNLV. Kirby spent the last nine years with the Los Angeles Angels, and Martinez, who played for the Rebels in 1997, was at Riverside Community College in Riverside, Calif., the last two years.
