‘Inspired’ Mustangs dominate

Sophomore quarterback Garrett Gosse made sure the Mustangs’ work was all but done by halftime.

Gosse threw for 283 yards and four touchdowns in the first half as The Meadows turned a Class 2A Southern League showdown into a laugher Friday with a 42-14 home win.

“We started a new thing; we went five wide (receivers),” Gosse said. “That really opened it up and maybe got them confused. We came out inspired, and if we come out inspired every game, that’s what we can do.”

Gosse completed his first 10 passes. He finished 19-for-21 for 283 yards, with his only attempt in the second half a completion for no gain.

“Absolutely, we wanted to come out and be aggressive,” DeSantis said. “I knew it was important to set the tempo early. We just wanted to come out and get some early points and get them out of their running game.”

The Mustangs (6-1, 5-0) won their 10th straight home game.

The Meadows’ Austin Brown caught six passes for 118 yards, including touchdown receptions of 44, 3 and 14 yards. Max Newman had six receptions for 84 yards and one TD, and Dylan Lee caught five balls for 79 yards.

Brown intercepted three passes to lead The Meadows’ defense, which forced four turnovers and held the Lynx (5-3, 4-2) to their lowest scoring total since their season opener.

• Moapa Valley 68, Sunrise Mountain 0 — At Sunrise Mountain, the Pirates (5-3) rushed for 245 yards en route to routing the Miners (1-7).

Kelan Weiss passed for touchdowns of 20 and 3 yards in the first half as Moapa Valley took a 47-0 halftime lead.

Casey Green rushed for 93 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Haydn Waite added TD runs of 9, 1 and 7 yards.

• Virgin Valley 15, Boulder City 14 — At Mesquite, the Bulldogs (3-5, 1-0 Class 3A Southern) built a 15-0 halftime lead and survived a late scare to nip the Eagles (5-4, 0-2).

Boulder City pulled within 15-14 with a touchdown on Ross LaMarca’s 48-yard screen pass to Devin Combs with 1:28 to play but pushed the conversion kick wide right, missing a chance to tie the score.

Virgin Valley recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.

Richard Vidal had a 36-yard run for a score, and Humberto Urias hooked up with Daniel Gleave on a 54-yard scoring strike to give the Bulldogs their lead.

Preston Swasey caught a 13-yard TD pass from LaMarca in the third quarter, cutting the Eagles’ deficit to 15-8.

Combs had 22 carries for 107 yards for Boulder City, which outgained the Bulldogs 300-196 in total yards.

• Henderson International 46, Indian Springs 14 — At Indian Springs, Chris Miele caught three TD passes, including two in the fourth quarter to help the Wolverines (3-5, 2-3 1A Southern) pull away from the Thunderbirds (2-5, 1-4).

Miele caught touchdown passes of 53 and 82 yards from Jay Sutorius early in the fourth quarter after Indian Springs had pulled within 24-14. Sutorius ran for 100 yards and threw for 153.

• Tonopah 61, Spring Mountain 20 — At Tonopah, Denver Otteson rushed for 264 yards and three touchdowns on 28 attempts to lead the Muckers (4-4, 4-1 1A Southern) past the Eagles (6-3, 4-2).

Otteson scored on runs of 60, 47 and 9 yards. He also threw for 30 yards and a touchdown.
