Las Vegan Asia Muhammad loses in singles at Red Rock Pro Open
Unseeded Asia Muhammad of Las Vegas lost to seventh-seeded Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay 6-3, 7-5 on Tuesday in the first round of the Red Rock Pro Open at Red Rock Country Club.
Wild cards Caitlin Whoriskey and Jennifer Brady won their first-round matches. Whoriskey, a former three-time All-American at Tennessee, defeated Louisa Chirico 6-3, 6-0, and Brady, a sophomore at UCLA, ousted Amandine Hesse 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-3.
In the final round of qualifying, former Wimbledon semifinalist Alexandra Stevenson fell to Alexa Glatch, retiring in the second set because of illness after losing the first 6-3.
Muhammad and Maria Sanchez, the top-seeded doubles team, will meet Giola Barbieri and Amandine Hesse today on Stadium Court. The match is the fourth one in the morning session, which begins at 9:30 a.m.
Defending champion Melanie Oudin, seeded sixth, will meet Naomi Broady in the first match on Stadium Court. Top-seeded Tereza Smitkova will face qualifier Kateryna Bonderanko in the third match.
