Las Vegas ties mark in victory

Las Vegas’ 14th straight victory gave it a 1-0 lead over the Roadrunners in the best-of-7 series. Game 2 will be played at 7:11 p.m. Thursday at U.S. Airways Center.

Five players scored — four in the second period — and goaltender Mike McKenna made 28 saves as the Wranglers tied the league record set by the 2001 Louisiana Ice Gators and the 1994 Knoxville Cherokees.

"We came out strong in the first period and we were a little frustrated with the outcome then," Las Vegas coach Glen Gulutzan. "We were rewarded for our hard work in the second period, as we capitalized on the power play."

Shawn Limpright, Derek Edwardson, Marco Peluso, Tyler Mosienko and Aaron Power scored for the Wranglers, who set playoff records for most shots in a game (50) and one period (23 in the first). Power added two assists.

"We played a good game tonight and executed on our chances," Limpright said. "The first period we played well, but we just didn’t get much out of it. The second period opened up for us, and we cruised in the third period."

Las Vegas took control 3-1 with power-play goals by Edwardson and Power 21 seconds apart in the second period. Limpright and Mosienko also scored in the period.

Peluso gave Las Vegas a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 4:00 of the first. Phoenix tied the score with eight seconds left on Kris Hogg’s goal.
