Shelby Automobiles remains sponsor for local Cup event

Las Vegas Motor Speedway will announce today that Shelby Automobiles will sponsor its NASCAR Sprint Cup race for the second consecutive year.

The Feb. 28 race will be called the Shelby American and return to the race’s traditional 400-mile distance after this year’s Cup race was extended by 18 laps to 427 miles to honor the Shelby 427 event name.

Las Vegas-based Shelby will use next year’s event to recognize the 45th anniversary of the legendary Shelby G.T. 350 and Shelby 427 Cobra.

• DIVISIONAL DRAGS — The final Lucas Oil NHRA Drag Racing Series divisional race, with 900 race teams, begins today and runs through Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The event features Top Alcohol Dragsters, Top Alcohol Funny Cars and other NHRA Sportsman categories. Racing begins at 7:30 a.m. daily.

• OPEN COMP — The season’s biggest stock-car event at the LVMS Bullring opens tonight with qualifying for the 200-lap championship race in the Open Comp Super Late Models feature, which pays the winner $7,777.

Also on Saturday’s card are races for SuperClean Modifieds (75 laps), Limited Late Models (150 laps), Legends Cars (40 laps) and Bombers (40 laps). …

In last weekend’s Speedfest at the Bullring, the winners were Troy Regier (SMRA Supermodifieds), Brian Clausen (USAC Midgets), Pete Meyer (Bombers) and Michael Abbate (Legends Cars).

• OFF ROAD — The Off Road Championship off-road stadium series will open its 2010 season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s dirt track on March 27 and return May 15 and 16 for its third event. The series finished this season at the track two weeks ago; highlights will air at 11:30 a.m. Sunday on ABC (Channel 13).
