Nevada fishing report, Oct. 29, 2015

LAKE MEAD — Anglers are finding good action for striped bass. Sand Island has been productive. Most fish have been in the 1- to 3-pound range, but there also have been reports of larger fish. Catfish as large as 5 pounds have been fooled by anglers working the shoreline, and smallmouth bass have been hitting as well. All around, it has been a good fishing week.

LAKE MOHAVE — Stripers weighing from 2 to 10 pounds have been taking top-water baits north of Cottonwood Cove. Anglers are using Bucktail Jigs and Zara Spooks for luring in these big fish. Largemouth bass still are biting, but most are small. The coves above the power lines have been the most productive for bass.

LAUGHLIN — Striper fishing is slowing south of the dam, but anglers still are catching catfish with anchovies and worms. Trout fishing is expected to pick up following a fish plant set for Davis Camp on Nov. 21.

LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS — Small bass and bluegill are taking mealworms and night crawlers in most of the local ponds, but, with cooling water temperatures, action has slowed.

KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — Trout fishing has been excellent, with high success being reported on Hay Meadow and Dacey reservoirs. Fly-fishermen have reported they were most successful using black Woolly Buggers. Emergent vegetation has made shore fishing difficult.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Trout action has picked up. PowerBait in orange or green has been working. Night crawlers with bits of mini-marshmallows have been working as well. Mepp’s spinning lures also have been productive.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — Cooler water temperatures virtually have shut down the bass and crappie action but improved the trout bite. Trout are taking night crawlers and PowerBait in a variety of colorations.

EVENTS — The Nevada Department of Wildlife will hold a free Introduction to Fly-fishing class at Floyd Lamb Park from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Nov. 14. Registration is required. Go to www.ndow.org/Education or contact Ivy Santee at 702-486-5127, extension 3503, for more information.
