Spring Mountain rolls behind Williams, Powell
Eight-man football sometimes has a basketball feel in high-scoring games, especially when played on an 80-yard field.
It’s safe to say Spring Mountain has an effective fast break.
Meiyako Williams threw five touchdown passes and Price Powell rushed for four TDs to lead the host Eagles to an 80-40 win over Round Mountain on Friday in a Class 1A Southern League contest.
Spring Mountain (6-0, 4-0 1A Southern) now has the inside track for a home game in the 1A state playoffs.
“We’re definitely looking to get a home playoff game up here,” Eagles coach Aaron Masden said. “It just goes back to the hard work that (Williams) and the rest of the boys do in practice, taking direction and coaching very well.”
If the Eagles continue scoring at this rate, Masden might want to issue a friendly challenge to boys basketball coach Ed Cheltenham as to whose team can average more points this year.
Spring Mountain, which posted 641 yards of offense Friday, is averaging 63.7 points per game.
Williams completed 13 of 19 passes for 255 yards without throwing an interception. The junior also ran for 124 yards and a score on 14 carries.
“He’s pretty much unstoppable,” Powell said. “Meiyako can run the ball, and if somebody gets through the line, he can pitch the ball to me or throw to Leroy (Freeman).”
Powell also seemed unstoppable, rushing for 159 yards on 14 carries. He scored on runs of 17, 5, 10 and 39 yards.
“We need to have a lot of different weapons to get after people, and (Powell) stepping up the past several weeks is huge,” Masden said. “He has confidence in his speed, and it shows.”
Round Mountain (3-3, 1-2) lost a fumble on the opening kickoff, and Spring Mountain needed only four plays to score on a 17-yard run by Powell. Williams ran in the 2-point conversion, and the Eagles never trailed.
Freeman had four receptions for 127 yards, including TD catches of 35, 24 and 61.
Christopher Munro caught four passes for 84 yards and a score for Spring Mountain, and Jaytraveonte Davis had four catches for 35 yards and a TD.
■ Laughlin 38, Calvary Chapel 14 — At Laughlin, Corey Beggs threw two TDs to Jimmy Minnier and ran for a score to lead the Cougars (5-1, 3-1 2A Southern) past the Lions (2-4, 0-4).
Jackson Walton returned a blocked punt for a touchdown for Laughlin, which led 26-0 at halftime.
■ Beatty 42, Sandy Valley 17 — At Beatty, Brandon Villanueva ran for two touchdowns, and Dakota Dawson ran for one score and caught a TD pass from Jacob Zamora as the Hornets (3-2, 2-2 1A Southern) routed the Sidewinders (1-4, 0-3).
Sandy Valley’s Randal Spencer ran for a score, and Brandon Hughes caught a TD pass.
■ Tonopah 28, Indian Springs 12 — At Indian Springs, the Muckers (3-3, 2-1 1A Southern) returned a fumble for a touchdown on their way to a 21-12 halftime lead and beat the Thunderbirds (2-4, 0-4).
Indian Springs’ Devin Jackson rushed for 114 yards and one TD on 14 carries.
