Tavernari helps BYU down Utah

PROVO, Utah — Bishop Gorman High graduate Jonathan Tavernari scored five of his 20 points in the final 1:03 to help Brigham Young pull away and post its school-record 45th consecutive home victory, 67-59 over Utah on Wednesday night.

Lee Cummard added 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Jimmer Fredette scored 14 for the Cougars (21-5, 10-1 Mountain West Conference), who swept the state rivalry for the second straight year.

Johnnie Bryant led the Utes with 15 points.

• New Mexico 68, Air Force 51 — At Air Force Academy, Colo., J.R. Giddens scored 14 points and Daniel Faris 11 as the Lobos (21-6, 8-4) defeated the Falcons (13-12, 5-7) for their fifth consecutive victory.

Eric Kenzik led Air Force with a career-high 11 points.

• Texas Christian 66, Colorado State 64 — At Fort Worth, Texas, Brent Hackett scored 19 points, hitting all 11 of his free throws, to lead the Horned Frogs (12-12, 5-7) past the Rams (6-19, 0-11).

Hackett made four free throws in the final 19 seconds to clinch the victory. TCU went 27-for-28 at the foul line.
