Top PCL slugger powers Bees to victory over 51s

Mark Trumbo’s first-inning grand slam ignited Salt Lake’s offense Thursday night in the Bees’ 10-5 Pacific Coast League win over the 51s in Salt Lake City.

Trumbo, the PCL’s leader in home runs (16) and RBIs (55), connected on a 1-1 pitch from Rey Gonzalez (5-6) with one out after two singles and a walk. The Bees (34-31) added three runs in the second inning and led 10-2 after six.

Gonzalez was tagged for nine runs, eight earned, on 12 hits and one walk in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out one.

J.P. Arencibia hit his 14th homer of the season and Brian Dopirak his seventh, and both finished 2-for-4 for Las Vegas (29-39), which was outhit 17-10.

Peter Bourjos and Paul McAnulty each went 3-for-5 for Salt Lake, which got hits from all nine of its starting batters. Six Bees had multiple hits.

Rich Thompson (1-1), the first of four Salt Lake relievers, was credited with the win after shutting out the 51s on one hit and no walks in 2 2/3 innings.

Amalio Diaz, normally a reliever, started for the Bees and gave up two runs in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out five.
