Unheralded Idaho State fends off Utah for upset

POCATELLO, Idaho — Guard Matt Stucki had 20 points, nine rebounds and nine assists as Idaho State beat Utah for the first time in 50 years, 72-68 on Saturday night.

Clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch helped Idaho State (2-5) preserve its first win over the Utes (5-2) since the 1958-59 season.

Idaho State led 66-65 with 33 seconds remaining. From there, Amorrow Morgan hit 5 of 7 seven free-throw attempts, and Stucki hit 1 of 2 to seal the win.

Center Luke Nevill led Utah with 22 points. Shaun Green scored 14 and Carlon Brown 11 for the Utes.

Idaho State led 45-34 at halftime, led by 16 points from Stucki, who went 6 of 9 from the field in the first half.

• Brigham Young 68, Utah State 63 — At Salt Lake City, Jonathan Tavernari scored a game-high 24 points and added nine rebounds and four steals to lead the Cougars over the Aggies.

The Aggies (5-1) had a chance to tie the game with 3.4 seconds left, but Tavernari stole the inbounds pass, was fouled and made two free throws to seal the victory at Energy Solutions Arena, home of the NBA’s Utah Jazz.

The Cougars improved to 8-0 for their best start since 1987-88.

Gary Wilkinson had 22 points and nine rebounds for the Aggies.

• New Mexico 60, Southern Mississippi 58 — At Albuquerque, N.M., Dairese Gary made two free throws with 4.7 seconds remaining to lift the Lobos over the Golden Eagles (4-3).

The Lobos (4-4) trailed by 11 points early in the second half before rallying.

• San Diego State 57, San Diego 46 — At San Diego, Kyle Spain scored 16 points and Tim Shelton 12 to lead the Aztecs over the Toreros.

Spain scored the first eight points for San Diego State (7-1), which took the lead for good midway through the first half en route to its sixth straight win.

San Diego (4-4) suffered a major loss when leading scorer Brandon Johnson ruptured his left Achilles tendon late in the first half.

• Texas Christian 66, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 53 — At Fort Worth, Texas, Kevin Langford scored 20 points, and the Horned Frogs overcame an eight-point deficit to beat the Islanders (4-4).

Langford shot 6 of 8 from the field and 8 of 10 from the free-throw line to lead TCU (7-2). Ronnie Moss added 11 points and Keion Mitchem 10.

• Boise State 85, Colorado State 76 — At Boise, Idaho, center Kurt Cunningham scored 18 points, and five teammates also scored in double figures as the Broncos beat the Rams.

Mark Sanchez added 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Paul Noonan had 13 points, Aaron Garner and Ike Okoye had 11 apiece, and La’Shard Anderson scored 10 for the Broncos (6-1).

Dan Vandervieren paced Colorado State (3-5) with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

• Air Force 71, Northern Colorado 64 — At Greeley, Colo., Andrew Henke scored 23 points and Anwar Johnson 20 to lead the Falcons over the Bears.

The Bears (2-4) led 30-25 at halftime, and the lead changed hands seven times during the game. Air Force (6-2) took the lead for good with 3:55 to go when Henke hit a 3-pointer to make the score 58-55.

• Wyoming 62, Loyola Marymount 55 — At Los Angeles, Afam Muojeke scored 19 points and Tyson Johnson 16 as the Cowboys beat the Lions (0-8).

Muojeke had 16 points in the first half for the Cowboys (6-1).
