Utah girl helps create first girls-only tackle football league
Utah resident Sam Gordon is making sports headlines again — this time not for playing tackle football with the boys, but for helping create a league only for girls.
The league, which includes girls in the fifth and six grades comprising four teams, played its first games last weekend in Utah, according to KSL.com.
“So this was really awesome because girls can play with girls and they can actually play football,” Gordon told KSL.com.
It really is full contact football and they play by eight-man football rules.
“We’re making ‘play like a girl’ something totally different,” one player told KSL.com
Gordon first made headlines back in 2012 when a video of her, playing amongst boys in a football little league and out running all of them to score a touchdown, hit the internet and went viral.
“We’re hoping that in a few years there will be league’s all over the country,” Gordon said.
And the girls in the league are just as excited about putting on those uniforms and hitting each other as boys are.
“It’s not flag, it’s full on tackle. We hit each other hard,” player Kat Kirby said laughing.
