Walks help Sky Sox rally, beat 51s in season opener
Walks and missed opportunities led to the 51s’ undoing Thursday night in their season-opening 9-6 loss to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in a Pacific Coast League game in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Las Vegas led 5-1 after three innings, before 51s starter Wade Miller issued four walks and threw a wild pitch in the fifth. The Sky Sox, buoyed by Kenny Perez’s two-out, two-run single in that inning, led 6-5 after five and scored one run in each of the final three innings.
Miller (0-1) allowed six runs on two hits and seven walks in 4 2/3 innings. Joel Peralta got the win for Colorado Springs, pitching 1 2/3 hitless innings in relief of starter Greg Reynolds.
Joe Inglett went 3-for-6 with a leadoff double for Las Vegas, which had an 11-8 edge in hits but left 15 runners on base.
J.P. Arencibia went 2-for-5 with a two-run double for the 51s, Scott Campbell was 2-for-5 with an RBI single, and Randy Ruiz drove in two runs with a ground-out and a sacrifice fly.
Matt Murton had the game’s lone home run, a fourth-inning solo shot, for the Sky Sox.
