AROUND TOWN: Many shelter animals need loving homes
With more and more home foreclosures, many pets are ending up on the street. If you are looking for a pet, consider checking one of the local animal shelters first.
About a month and a half ago, my husband and I visited the Nevada SPCA shelter, located at 4800 W. Dewey Drive in southwest Las Vegas. We ended up bringing home a sweet, loving dog named Pepper.
There were hundreds of animals (including a rooster and a pig) waiting to be adopted into a loving home. One of the most difficult things
I liked how honest the shelter was about the animals. If the dog had any medical conditions, needed an owner with experience or was nervous around humans, it was clearly marked on the sheet above the animal’s cage.
When we had finally decided to meet Pepper, the staff asked us several questions: did we have any experience owning a dog? Did we own our home, or did our landlord allow dogs? What were our work schedules like? We appreciated that the shelter was interviewing us to make sure we would be good pet owners.
Even better, someone from the shelter called me about a month afterward to check up on Pepper. The shelter volunteer also “cat tested” Pepper before we left to make sure that she would get along with my cat.
For a $75 adoption fee, we walked out with the newest member of our household, a bag of food and a free vet check-up.
