Conspiracy theorists cry foul over Sydney Harbour shark video

The Internet is buzzing about a close encounter with a great white shark in Sydney Harbour.

But this buzz is crying foul over the authenticy of the footage.

The video, uploaded by a Terry Tufferson on June 11, shows a man strapping a GoPro to his head, then jumping into the harbour only to find himself sharing the immediate space with a menacing-looking shark.

Awesome and terrifying all rolled into one … if it’s real.

The man jumps from Manly’s jump rock, which The Daily Telegraph describes as “notorious and popular” because of the fences constructed after repeated injuries to jumpers.

The conspiracy theorists have broken down the video and point out “scene match failures,” jump cuts and shark “teleportation.”

One commenter, who seems to want to believe, just can’t.

“The timing of everything just seems too perfect,” writes moviestim. “”I’m not saying with 100% certainty that it isn’t real but with what I know about videography, editing and special effects. It seems … fishy to me.”

Get it? Fishy.

Plus, as Gizmodo’s Campbell Simpson points out, “Big sharks in the harbour are rare.”

Now we just wait for Jimmy Kimmel to admit to the hoax.
