Dining pick of the week: El Cordobes

PICK OF THE WEEK:

EL CORDOBES

5020 E. Tropicana Ave. at Nellis Boulevard, 433-8226

Comfortable can be defined in so many ways when it comes to restaurant dining. Whatever that means to you, a new meaning can be found at El Cordobes, a small, family restaurant with friendly service that provides another definition to the word. With several booths and tables and a small television set, the relaxed environment gives way to home-style dishes such as fish tostada, tamales with green sauce and cheese, ranch-style shrimp and quesadillas (cheese, chicken or beef). And the small TV makes you feel like you’re in your own kitchen or dining room. Several soups are pork, corn, beef stew and goat. Both the tacos and tortas (sandwiches) can be made with adobada (marinated pork), Mexican sausage, lengua (beef tongue), chicken or birria (goat). There are nachos, burritos, shrimp and octopus cocktails, and combination plates featuring chile relleno, steak ranchero and steak with red or green chile. Popular breakfasts include eggs served with chorizo and shredded beef or ham with rice and beans. Combination plates begin at $6 and sandwiches at $4.50. El Cordobes is open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
