‘Fallen’ sure to please teens

Look out vampires, there’s a new supernatural heartthrob taking flight.

In Lauren Kate’s “Fallen,” Luce Price has been sent to Sword & Cross boarding school in Savannah after a mysterious fire killed one of her friends.

Luce dreads staying at the unwelcoming facility. Cell phones aren’t allowed, cameras watch all activity and the students, well, are all a bit strange.

There’s Arianne, a snarky dark-haired girl with black nail polish and black eyeliner who quickly takes Luce under her wing. And there’s Penn, a bookish student who, despite her abnormally layered clothes, turns out to be one of the most normal students there. Because, as Luce soon finds, these kids are anything but normal, especially the boys.

Cam paralyzes Luce with his emerald eyes and easy smile. His flirtatious nature often brings a blush to Luce’s cheeks. And Daniel — oh, heavy sigh — Daniel.

Luce immediately notices the young man with the golden hair, struck by his tan skin, his high cheek bones and soft lips. Daniel stirs a feeling of deja vu within Luce, and she’s sure they’ve met before. She stares at him, frozen by the feeling of recognition. As he turns toward her, he returns her gaze. He smiles, raises his hand — and shoots her the bird.

Though stunned and irritated by Daniel’s reaction, she can’t shake the feeling that she knows him. As the days pass and she begins settling in, she enlists Penn’s help to find out all she can about the mysterious Daniel.

Of course, this being a Gothic teen romance, things aren’t what they seem at Sword & Cross. As Luce tries to uncover Daniel’s secrets, the truth begins to shock her — and put her life in danger. For what Daniel has to hide is something even vampires would fear.

“Fallen” remains in step with the trend of young adult supernatural romances — right down to the love triangle. But it’s a formula that seems to keep teens reading, as I’m sure this novel will. And, as is to be expected these days, “Fallen” is the first in a series. “Torment” is expected out in September.
