Former USC player to compete for Rebels’ QB position
UNLV’s competition at quarterback got more crowded with former Southern California player James Boyd enrolling in school today.
Boyd (6 feet 5 inches, 250 pounds) played quarterback, defensive end and tight end in 2010 at USC before sitting out last season.
He was a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and Scout.com at Jordan High School in Bakersfield, Calif. Boyd passed for 4,266 yards and 44 touchdowns as a senior at Jordan, and he made 106 tackles, including eight sacks.
"We’re bringing him at quarterback," UNLV coach Bobby Hauck said. "It’s the opportunity he wants. Obviously, he can play a lot of different positions. He will get the opportunity to see if he is the best quarterback."
Hauck said Boyd has three seasons of eligibility remaining. Boyd and redshirt freshman Nick Sherry will go into spring practices beginning March 12 to try to unseat junior Caleb Herring as the starting quarterback.
