MORNING LINE: Community unites to prevent rural school closure

Residents of Kyle Canyon (and I am one) turned out by the dozen Tuesday night to show their support for keeping tiny Lundy Elementary School open despite its small enrollment and school district claims that its closure would help solve the state’s enormous fiscal crisis.

Citizens countered that they contribute $583,000 in property taxes that directly benefit the Clark County School District – more than double the district’s estimated costs to operate the school.

The greater question is, will closing the school really save any money?

The teacher and part-time, three-person staff have been offered jobs. The building will be maintained and used by the district.
The savings is at best minimal.

What wasn’t clear is whether CCSD officials and school board members present were actually listening to some very sound arguments.
