Nathan Adelson Hospice selected for National Hospice ‘Item Set’ project
Nathan Adelson Hospice has been selected by The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as one of nine facilities nationwide to participate in its “Hospice Item Set Pilot Project” to test patient-level data item reporting. The project will assist in further developing the Hospice Quality Reporting Program, which will be used on a national basis.
Nathan Adelson Hospice said in a statement that most hospices already collect many of the items in the item set. This project could standardize how hospices collect information regarding care provided to assess and manage patients’ symptoms and care preferences. The purpose of the pilot is to determine how this ‘item set’ affects hospice assessment and care processes.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to participate in this pilot program,” said Nathan Adelson Hospice president and chief executive officer Carole Fisher. “This is just one more way for Nathan Adelson Hospice to contribute to the development of quality hospice care nationwide.”
CMS has contracted RTI International to develop and pilot test the patient level item set to explore its feasibility and burden on the hospice. The project will take place from June through September of this year. Data from the study will be used to make recommendations to CMS regarding future development of the Hospice Quality Reporting Program. CMS has a vested interest in promoting higher quality and more efficient health care for Medicare beneficiaries. A section of the Affordable Care Act had mandated the creation of a quality reporting program for hospices.
