New Sharron Angle ad hits back at ‘too conservative’ label
A new Tea Party Express ad for Sharron Angle counters critics who say she’s "too conservative" to beat Democratic incumbent Sen. Harry Reid in the general election.
The former Reno Assemblywoman has been labeled as too conservative by some Republicans in Nevada and nationally who favor Sue Lowden in the GOP primary race for the Senate seat. And some left-leaning bloggers and media outlets also have criticized and mocked Angle for everything from suggesting the privatization of Social Security and Medicare to proposing in 2003 that Nevada look at a prison program which used sauna and massages to treat drug-adicted inmates. The program is similar to one backed by Scientologists.
In the new ad, the Tea Party Express says Angle has been attacked because she has skyrocketed in the polls since the national group endorsed her and she could win the GOP nomination if she maintains momentum heading into the June 8 primary.
"They say Sharron Angle is too conservative," says the new ad. "Well let’s get one thing clear: Our country faces record deficits, bailouts and excessive government regulation and control over our lives because our leaders in Washington were anything but conservative."
The ad says it will take candidates like Angle to win elections and go to Washington to fix the problems because she believes in "lower taxes, less government regulation and a return to Constitutional principles."
"While some liberals might find it funny to mock or attack Sharron Angle, we the people, the silent majority, know that we need more conservative leaders like Sharron Angle to help us take our country back," the 60-second ad says.
The ad is going out on radio first and then the same message will be aired in TV spots, according to the Tea Party Express.
The national group has spent more than $300,000 to date to help Angle and plans to spend up to $500,000 during the primary campaign.
Polls show Angle and Lowden, a former state senator and casino executive, in a near dead heat with Las Vegas businessman Danny Tarkanian behind them, but still a contender in a race that will be decided in the last days.
