Summerlin park named after Wilbur, Theresa Faiss

Summerlin’s newest community park, tucked between Wet ‘n’ Wild and Faiss Middle School, opened in 2013 without a name. Completed in partnership with The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, and Clark County, the two large entities left the naming of the park to one group: the Faiss Middle School Student Council.

“It’s always great to include community input, especially when young people can get involved in the development of something that was created for their enjoyment,” said Julie Cleaver, vice president, planning and design, Summerlin. Cleaver oversees the designing of Summerlin’s parks, neighborhoods and common areas, and played an integral part in the layout of the park.

Members of Faiss Middle School’s Student Council submitted essays and a committee that included employees of Hughes Corp., Clark County and Wet ‘n’ Wild selected from the nearly 20 entries.

“The students wrote some fantastic essays. They clearly put a lot of thought into how this park should be identified,” Cleaver said.

The winning name, Wilbur and Theresa Faiss Park, was selected in honor of the husband and wife, recognized for decades of leadership and volunteerism in the community. “It seemed especially fitting for the park to carry their names, as is sits adjacent the school that is also named in their honor.”

County Commissioner Susan Brager, who played a role in developing the park, unveiled the name at a ceremony which included Faiss students and three member of the Faiss family.

The park, open to the public and managed by the county’s Parks and Recreation Department, features three picnic ramadas, a wide grassy area for free play and two intricately designed shaded play structures featuring multiple bridges and slides. Construction will start later this year on the centerpiece of the park, a planned 25,000-square-foot aquatic center with a junior Olympic-size pool and an aerobic pool.
