Third grader saves choking friend

A 9-year-old Minnesota boy used quick judgement to save a friend who was choking by jumping into action and performing the Heimlich maneuver.

The young boy, Zach Furman, and his friend Aiden Roberts were at a school picnic and looking for their friend Fletcher Dypwick to invite him to sit with them when they spotted him choking, according to CBS Minnesota.

“I thought he was throwing up for a sec, and Zach says ‘No, no, he’s choking.’ So I ran and got teachers,” Roberts told CBS Minnesota.

Instead of waiting for the teachers to get there, Furman jumped into action and performed the Heimlich on his friend, saving his life.

“I started doing the Heimlich,” Furman said. “I put my hands in a fist and I pulled up … cuz the air needs to get up and it can pop the food right out – which it did!”

CBS Minnesota reported that Furman’s dad had just shown him and his brother how to do the Heimlich maneuver a couple weeks prior.

“I wouldn’t call myself a hero for a Heimlich,” Furman said. “But I’m glad Fletcher’s OK.”
