U.S. Sen. Cory Booker and mom visit with crowd at Las Ventanas in Summerlin

New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker visited with residents at Las Ventanas in Summerlin May 7 with his mother, Carolyn Booker, for a Mother’s Day-themed event moderated by former KLAS-TV, Channel 8 anchor Paula Francis. Topics during the fireside chat included legacy, philanthropy, public service and Sen. Booker’s life journey. “It’s been a powerful thing for me to know how impactful even a small amount of philanthropy can be in changing the destinies of people and affecting generations of people yet unborn,” he said. “So it was a model I grew up with and something I like to infuse in my life.” A graduate of Stanford University and Yale Law School and a Rhodes Scholar, Booker was elected to the Newark City Council in 1998 at 29. In 2006, he was elected mayor of Newark and served for more than seven years until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2013. In 2014, he was re-elected to a full six-year term.
