Parts of EDC shut down due to high winds in Southern Nevada

Strong winds Saturday night closed multiple stages at the Electric Daisy Carnival at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

An announcement was made over the loudspeakers at the BionicJungle stage around 8:45 p.m. explaining that area was being closed due to safety concerns and instructing crowd members to leave the venue.

While the BionicJungle is a smaller stage on the speedway’s infield, the CircuitGrounds is one of the fest’s largest, where popular acts like Rezz, Isoknock and Charlotte de Witte were scheduled to perform tonight.

An attendee, Brian Jahnny, said in a text message that the CircuitGrounds and the QuantumValley stages were also temporarily closed along with all the rides. Though both stages reopened around 10:45 p.m., moments before it started to rain.

The rest of the festival proceeded as scheduled.

Just before 9 p.m., a post on X by Brownies & Lemonade showed a picture of a projection screen at the carnival stating “Due to severe weather the stage must be shut down until further notice.”

This after showers in northwest Las Vegas were moving east around 8 p.m. Saturday.

A wind advisory for Southern Nevada began at 11 a.m. Saturday by the National Weather Service and could end at 11 p.m. Southwest winds in the Las Vegas Valley and surrounding areas were ranging from 20 to 30 mph, with gusts of more than 40 mph. Winds are expected to continue, according to the NWS website, and “are accompanied by a line of thunderstorms producing between .1 and .25 inch of rainfall,” as seen in Centennial Hills.

“Dust is moving into the Las Vegas area from the southwest. Visibilities could be reduced to less than 3 miles at times,” the weather service posted on X just before 6 p.m.

In previous years, strong winds have created problems at EDC. In 2019, high winds led to the closure of some stages. In 2012, blustery winds forced the festival to shut down early on Saturday night.
