Great Indoors seminar to share kitchen ideas

History of chair filled with dignity

As with so many things that we take for granted, the phrase “take a seat” has a long history. The seat part, that is. I had never thought much about how long the chair had been around until I was studying for a design exam.

Walkway paves path to new friendships

: On my side yard I have grass that leads to a backyard patio. I would like to install stepping stones as a walkway leading to the patio. I want to keep the grass, but I don’t want to set the stones right on top of the grass. How can I accomplish this?

Simple living saves resources

Many of us are focused on the economy right now. It seems that every day brings news of unprecedented financial change. The topic is complex but there is a fundamental component that comes to mind as both an opportunity and solution for many. It is the concept of simple living. It is the opposite of a near-trillion dollar corporate bailout, but has the potential to be many times more powerful and effective.

Room with a view

As the hot summer days trade in their excessive heat for cooler evenings and comfortable temperatures, Las Vegans are turning off the air conditioning, opening the windows and, yes, spending more time outside. Autumn is arguably the most inviting and pleasant season in the Las Vegas Valley, so what better way to enjoy it than with friends and family in your own backyard?

Make a date to harvest, ripening fruit

As temperatures drop, crickets and other vermin will try to find entrances into your home. If you apply pesticides around the outside of your home, now would be a good time to do that. Spray should be directed to where the home meets the soil. You might also spray inside irrigation boxes where so many pests like roaches and black widow spiders like to congregate. There are some organic sprays that can be used but they are usually not persistent and may have to be reapplied at a later date.

Opening-day foray beats staying home

It still was dark when the obnoxious alarm on my cell phone went off. I hate the alarm tone, but I don’t change it because it does the job. I found the snooze button and for several minutes lay under the warm covers and listened for the wind, all the time hoping I wouldn’t hear it.
