Vinyl base molding rolls along easily

: In my kitchen I have a vinyl floor. Around the perimeter of the room I would like to install some vinyl base molding so that the entire thing is washable. Is this any different from installing wood molding?

Giant pumpkin growers go to the extreme

Just like gardeners, the act of gardening can take on many forms. As you and I fret over important backyard challenges such as why our hydrangeas aren’t blooming or how come that tomato just won’t ripen fast enough, others are dealing with much bigger issues. Scattered across the country, there are a few thousand “extreme gardeners” who methodically plod through the art and science of competing to grow the world’s largest pumpkin each year.

Rugs add so much to any room

Other than a great coat of paint, nothing else you can do to your space will signal a greater change than adding an area rug. I absolutely love them because — regardless of your style, color preferences or the space in question — the addition of an area rug will make that space more comfortable and a lot more interesting.

Central bud critical to palm’s survival

: In March of this year, I had a pindo palm planted. Initially, the plant did very well; however, now the fronds are all brown and brittle. I gently tugged on the center fronds and the entire center came out. The base was mushy and there were tiny worms as well. Does this mean my palm is history? Please help!

WINTER WATERS

There are swimming pools in the Snow Belt and swimming pools in the Sun Belt. To properly winterize a pool in the Sun Belt, simply reduce the amount of chemicals you regularly feed the pool and consider reducing its daily filtration time. To properly winterize a pool in the Snow Belt … well … there are way too many steps so it’s much easier just to move to the Sun Belt.

Autumn surprises help plans fall in place

Maybe it’s the crisp air that energizes me or the beauty of the fall trees that inspires me, but when autumn hits, I can’t wait to entertain. While I’m eager to fill my home with friends this time of year, I’m equally as excited to spend a Sunday afternoon creating a memorable dining-room display that will delight my guests.

Guarding drift boat has drawbacks

Luke turned and asked me to keep an eye on the drift boat while he and Brett Prettyman, outdoor editor at the Salt Lake Tribune, shuttled the pickup and boat trailer to our intended take out at a place called Dearborn several miles downriver. Brett and I were fishing partners for the day, and Luke, a tall drink of water from Virginia, was our guide.
