Aussie film star Bill Hunter dies of cancer at 71

Bill Hunter, the archetypal working class Australian of a multitude of movies including the quirky trio “Muriel’s Wedding,” “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” and “Strictly Ballroom” has died of cancer, his manager said. He was age 71.

Cannes contenders include Malick, Almodovar, silent film

CANNES, France — Robert De Niro, an actor of few words, and a film of hardly any words could prove a perfect match as the Cannes Film Festival prepares to hand out its awards. Among titles competing for the top prize Sunday at the world’s most-prestigious film festival is French director Michel Hazanavicius’ silent movie “The Artist,” a story about early Hollywood likely to appeal to an actor and filmmaker such as De Niro who heads the awards jury.

Shackleford, a 12-1 underdog, holds off Animal Kingdom to capture Preakness

Shackleford won the Preakness today in Baltimore, holding off a late charge from Animal Kingdom to win as a 12-1 underdog. The victory was redemption for Shackleford, who finished fourth behind Kentucky Derby-winner Animal Kingdom after leading for much of that race.
