BASEBALL: Rancho outslugs Liberty

Chayse Baker led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a triple and scored the winning run one out later on a single by Anthony Guzman as the Rancho baseball team outlasted visiting Liberty 13-12 on Thursday.

Brian Whitaker didn’t do much running last week and I’m not sure he was in the mood for sweets as his team lost to Basic 11-3, instead making lineup and pitching changes with the sort of calming stroll of a man confident in his approach. You know, because 500 wins will do that for a guy.

Arbor View shortstop Nick Quintana looks toward MLB draft

Nick Quintana, a 5-foot-10-inch, 190-pound shortstop, is rated 64th overall among draft-eligible players by Perfect Game USA. He is the No. 77 prospect in Baseball America’s Top 100 draft rankings,which includes college and high school players. Based on those rankings, Quintana, an Arizona commit, theoretically would be taken in the second or third round.
