51s batter El Paso, 13-7

Center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis had four hits and drove in four runs and the 51s defeated the El Paso Chihuahuas 13-7 Wednesday in El Paso, Texas.

The 51s scored three runs in both the first and third innings, added two more in the fourth and were up 11-2 in the middle of the fifth. The 51s, who had three hits from Allan Dykstra in addition to Nieuwenhuis going 4 for 6, banged out 14 hits while El Paso had 17 hits, four by catcher Rocky Gale.

Las Vegas starting pitcher Logan Verrett went six-plus innings and allowed seven runs while striking out nine in improving to 3-2. El Paso starter Keyvius Sampson, who lasted just three innings and gave up six runs, dropped to 2-4.

The teams play the third game of their four-game series at 5:35 p.m. Thursday.
