Dining Pick of the Week: Hush Puppy

PICK OF THE WEEK:

HUSH PUPPY

1820 N. Nellis Blvd. at East Lake Mead Boulevard, 702-438-0005

Down South, a hush puppy is a tasty ball of cornmeal dough deep-fried in fat. But what makes this Southern specialty taste even better is when it’s placed alongside frog legs or Louisiana shrimp. That is what happens at Hush Puppy, which has been serving its namesake and other great Southern dishes since 1975. Appetizers include fried green tomatoes, seafood gumbo, alligator tail, New Orleans fried oysters and Louisiana oysters on the half shell. The all-you-can-eat dinners of catfish filets, fried shrimp or Fiddlers (small whole catfish) come with hush puppies, fries and salad bar. Featured po-boys are catfish, fried oyster and alligator. Several platters include snow crab, blackened catfish or tilapia and the Big Bayou Platter with shrimp, alligator tail, fried oysters and catfish. Platters come with hush puppies, salad bar and baked potato, fries, collard greens or corn cobbette. Other entrees are top sirloin, charbroiled chicken breast, 14-ounce New York strip and barbecue baby back ribs. Two popular desserts are Georgia pecan pie and Sister Rosie’s sweet potato pie. Appetizers begin at $4.95, and all-you-can-eat meals start at $12.95. Hush Puppy is open from 4:30 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. — Jack Bulavsky
