Atkinson ‘never told anyone’ about threat toward Assembly Speaker

State Sen. Kelvin Atkinson, D-North Las Vegas, said he "never told anyone" that Assemblyman Steven Brooks, D-North Las Vegas, made a "direct threat" toward Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick, D-North Las Vegas.

"Let me make it very clear, I never told anyone that I had knowledge from Steve of a direct threat on the speaker's life," Atkinson wrote.

Brooks was arrested Jan. 19 and charged with threatening a public official. A North Las Vegas police report on the incident stated Atkinson and Las Vegas City Councilman Ricki Barlow warned police that Brooks was behaving erratically, had a gun and was a potential danger to himself or others.

The state attorney general's office, which is prosecuting the case, has not yet filed a complaint against Brooks. The crime of threatening a public official is a felony.

On Friday, Barlow also denied hearing Brooks make a a direct threat toward Kirkpatrick, contrary to the police report.
