Foothill uses OT to get by Las Vegas
October 31, 2012 - 1:04 am
It was a shot Jillian Vigil had sent sailing over the crossbar in the past, but Vigil's placement Tuesday was perfect.
The sophomore midfielder took a free kick from just outside the penalty box and dropped it just under the crossbar and out of the reach of Las Vegas High's goalkeeper to give Foothill a 3-2 overtime win over the Wildcats in the Sunrise Region quarterfinals at Heritage Park.
"We practiced them over, and over again, and several games they've gone over," Foothill coach Cynthia Guzman said. "And when it counted the most, it was right where it needed to be.
"It sank right behind the goalie's fingers. And we practiced that a lot yesterday, free kicks exactly like that."
Las Vegas (6-4-2) entered the overtime with the momentum, after tying the score with about two minutes left in regulation.
Midfielder Alica Nunez took a pass from Ashlee Jordan and angled a shot that went off the hands of Foothill's goalkeeper and into the net to tie the game.
Foothill (8-5-2) took the early advantage when Kierstyn Cash scored in the game's first minute.
Las Vegas tied it eight minutes later on a goal by Adriana Domingo.
The Falcons regained the lead with about five minutes left in the half when a Las Vegas defender failed to clear the ball, and Rachel Neff poked it home.
The Falcons play Coronado (10-5-2) in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday.
■ Coronado 5, Canyon Springs 0 - Kathleen Cuevas scored twice to help the Cougars eliminate the Pioneers (8-10).

SUNSET REGION
■ Arbor View 4, Bonanza 1 - For the first 60 minutes, the Aggies didn't look comfortable.
Arbor View led underdog Bonanza 2-1 in their Sunset Region quarterfinal, but the Bengals had a handful of chances to tie the score and put pressure on the Northwest League's top seed.
Amberly Halstead and Bailee Davis allowed the Aggies to take a deep breath. Halstead set up Davis for a low blast, giving the Aggies a cushion on their way to a win over Bonanza (3-6-2).
"That helped us settle down," Arbor View coach Jay Howard said. "I think it took the wind out of Bonanza, too."
The Aggies (11-4) never trailed, scoring on Chandler Yoder's penalty kick in the 19th minute, but the Bengals' Kara Kwasniowski tied it in the 32nd minute.
Four minutes later, Jamie Wilson put the Aggies back ahead, knocking home a pass from Lexi Eply.
Halstead set up Alexis Pryor for the fourth goal eight minutes later.
Arbor View advances to play Bishop Gorman (9-3) at 4 p.m. Thursday.
■ Bishop Gorman 3, Shadow Ridge 0 - Daisy Cabrera scored twice in the final 11 minutes of the first half as the Gaels eliminated the Mustangs (11-3-1).
Gorman broke a scoreless tie just past the midway point of the first half when Madison Moore scored on a low shot.
Cabrera took care of the rest, scoring in the 29th minute and ripping a left-footed shot from 25 yards out with three minutes left in the half.
Jessica Anaya and Danielle Maatouk combined on the shutout.
■ Palo Verde 4, Desert Oasis 0 - Serenity Grim had two goals and two assists as the Panthers (11-3-1) dominated the Diamondbacks (7-6-4).

DIVISION I-A
■ Tech 3, Cheyenne 2 - Tech sophomore Abrana Wielgosiak has trouble recalling a more exhilarating moment in her young soccer career than her last-minute match-winning goal Tuesday.
"It's unimaginable," Wielgosiak said. "I feel blessed to be here. I never expected this."
The Roadrunners, with the help of Wielgosiak's score and a controversial call, outlasted Cheyenne in a Division I-A Southern Region quarterfinal.
Tech (12-2-1) will play Faith Lutheran at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Staring down a 2-1 deficit, Tech scored twice in a six-minute span. Carla Valle knocked home Alex Guzman's penalty kick. A bevy of Desert Shields defenders appeared to deflect the ball just as it was crossing the goal line, but the goal stood.
In the final minute, Wielgosiak scored off a deflected free kick outside the box.
Guzman scored just before the midway point of the first half, but Cheyenne (10-6-2) staged a second-half comeback, scoring in a four-minute span on goals by Mackenzie Smith and Adrianna Basin.
■ Faith Lutheran 9, Boulder City 0 - Charlotte Vancura, Kristi Chinn, and Emily Neighbors each scored two goals as the Crusaders (14-6-2) flew past the Eagles (8-7-1).
