Fishing Report, Dec. 13

■ LAKE MEAD - Vegas Wash appears to be the spot for catching stripers. For the past couple of weeks, anglers using shad or jigging lures at depths of 50 to 60 feet have been doing well. Action has been slow in the Hemenway area, and the fish cleaner is down until the end of the month, but the cleaning station at Vegas Bay still is available. Anglers fishing the Overton Arm are catching stripers, but shad are hard to come by.  Plastic worms and crawdads in purple and brown have been taking the hits from largemouth and smallmouth bass.

■ LAKE MOHAVE - Largemouth and smallmouth bass still are active despite the lower water level, which slowly is rising. Striper action has been slow, but trolling with anchovies in 30 to 50 feet still has proven productive. Quality over quantity seems to be the general result when striper fishing at Willow Beach. From mile markers 49 to 52, anglers have caught stripers up to 24 pounds. Most have been caught with AC Plugs. Trout fishing has been good following the weekly trout plants. A variety of PowerBaits, as well as lures, such as Jakes, Panther Martins and Rooster Tails, have proven effective.

■ URBAN PONDS - Anglers have found good fishing following the recent Nevada Department of Wildlife trout plants. Plans call for trout plants now through early spring. The NDOW planted trout in the ponds at Floyd Lamb Park, Sunset Park, Veterans Memorial Park and Hafen Park in Mesquite. PowerBait and small spinners have been the ticket.

■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA - Area personnel have seen no fishing pressure in recent days, and the survey boxes were empty as well. The launch ramps at Haymeadow and Cold Springs are surrounded by ice, which extends about 40 feet before reaching open water. Launching at Adams-McGill and Dacey reservoirs should not be a problem. The upper end of Adams-McGill is frozen, but the lower end still has plenty of fishable open water. Water temperatures are around 40 degrees, and roads are in good condition. A storm is expected to reach the area today and could leave 3 to 4 inches of snow.

■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR - The reservoir remains open, though anglers will find ice around the edges in the mornings. But, with a winter storm expected before this weekend, that could change quickly. Patient anglers were rewarded last week with limits of rainbows, but expect to spend a few hours to acquire them. PowerBait is working well.

■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR - The reservoir remains mostly open, but, with overnight temperatures dropping, there has been ice along the shoreline. Anglers are catching rainbow trout with PowerBait.
