Brush fire destroys home, sparks evacuations south of Reno

RENO - A wind-whipped brush fire destroyed one home and was threatening several more in Washoe Valley south of Reno on Thursday afternoon.

Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Chief Charlie Moore said the fire that broke out about 12:30 p.m. destroyed at least one home along with a half dozen out buildings on the northeast side of Washoe Lake near Clark Drive.

Moore told the Reno-Gazette Journal that crews were doing their best to keep the fire from advancing farther east than White Pine Drive, where evacuations were ordered. But he said the wind was blowing that direction off the mountains at 50 mph to 60 mph.

The fire had burned five to 10 acres. Eastlake Boulevard was closed.
