Man shot by Washoe County deputy identified

RENO - A man shot by a Washoe County sheriff's deputy near the Gold Ranch Casino west of Reno has been identified as 27-year-old Michael Nelson Heil of Truckee, Calif.

The Reno Police Department on Monday said Heil remains hospitalized but his condition has been upgraded from critical to stable.

Police say the unnamed deputy was performing a routine patrol Saturday afternoon when the shooting happened near the casino and RV park along Interstate 80.

The deputy was not injured, and further details of events have not been released. Reno police are handling the investigation.

The deputy was placed on routine, paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

Those findings will be forwarded to the district attorney's office to determine if the shooting was justified.
