Boy found in irrigation ditch dies at Reno hospital

FALLON - A 6-year-old boy who was found in an irrigation ditch in Churchill County died Friday at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, the Lahontan Valley News reported.

Sheriff Ben Trotter said three boys were digging for bugs Aug. 18 along the ditch off Birch Road when two of them went home to get a bucket, leaving the victim alone.

He said the victim slipped into the canal and may have been in the water for as long as 20 minutes.

The two other boys couldn't find him when they returned to the canal, and rescuers were called.

The victim, whose name hasn't been released, was flown by Careflight helicopter to the Reno hospital.

An investigation is continuing.
